Wooden Ships x Claude Lorrain
Reimagined from "The Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba", 1648.
The National Gallery, London.
Inspired by the biblical story of the Queen of Sheba departing from the city to go meet King Solomon in Jerusalem, Wooden Ships is one of my favorite reimagined paintings. Lorrain painted this masterpiece with warm colors and shocking blue waters as our eyes descend into the same voyage as the queen. This is such a timeless piece, contrary to it being so heavily influenced by time—from the dated architecture of the city’s end to the sun rising in the early morning. Wooden Ships would surely enhance any room.
