The Wave was reimagined from arguably one of the most famous Japanese paintings ever made. Stemming from 36 Views of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa was created in admiration of the great volcano, Mount Fuji—a sacred mountain and the highest point in Japan. In both of these paintings, the waves are painted with such grand detailing, serving as a direct expression of Hokusai’s belief that “art had a life of its own.”
