The Pool x David Hockney
Reimagined from "Portrait of an Artist", 1972. Private Collection.
Portrait of an Artist was said to birthed out of heartbreak, when Hockney and his lover separated. He mixed his mourned emotions with his fascination of Californian pools into the most expensive painting ever sold by a live artist. The Pool, however, peels off the timestamp of the 70s when the two figures are removed. The wardrobe of the standing figure informs us of the era through fashion—now it’s unlikely to find a man in bootcut pants with pointed oxfords. However, the reimagined painting simply and brilliantly reflects many backyard realities of Los Angeles homes over the last 50 years.
