The Boat x John Waterhouse
Reimagined from "The Lady of Shalott", 1888. Tate Museum, London.
The Boat comes from the Pre-Raphaelite era, which is made up of artworks usually themed in literature that speak on love and death. The original piece, The Lady of Shalott, was based upon a four-part poem of the same name by Alfred Lord Tennyson. During these times, artists were also encouraged to go into nature, rejecting artificial aesthetics and aiming to reflect the world as is. In The Boat, we are graced with loud and intricate details from the pattern on the quilt to the various colors of the shrubs, while also being placed in the stillness of the stream. This painting simply embodies the beauty of existence, and masters it.
