Nicole Mitchell Gantt x Black Earth Ensemble Concert Improv Review

An improve review is a review written contemporaneous with myself experiencing the art.

Last night, I attended the Nicole Mitchell x Angel Bat Diwad Concert here in Manhattan. Held at 7th Avenue’s Carnegie Hall, Profy Nicole brings her Black Earth Ensemble to perform Xenogenesis Suite, the premier of a visual and sonic story told through Nicole and the ensemble’s imagination. This concert performance left me feeling vulnerable. By then end of the first composition, I sat with wet cheeks. It was truly a beautiful way to spend a Thursday evening—

she's showing me what love is. she rips through—

then she orchestrated my life. my haiku bursts,

an introduction

Calvin speaks

believe

Calvin lives.

violin:

her insanity moves in her neck. locs her crown

speaker:

breaths as music

breaths as whore

here comes that ambulance again. damn saxophone

she orchestrated the truth

“I need to open it”

the first truth I don't respect. write.

“the greatness— anything.”

“Am I dead?”

aghh.

“hOo. shhh”

head dance. head dodge.

How am I supposed to live if you keep telling my plans?

feminine flute /

he's cute

—he heard.

(trumpet)

she left her feelings in a piano~

& sings through her red glasses

“we collide” is a lie.

you bang I die.

you bang I cry.

“blood blood blood

& conscious”

I drip through her words, but ignorance is peace.

flute:

she wears grief well.

I'm upset to remember

I met Calvin in a horse, or a deer.

Jason—

I taste him on my tongue.

all the way through—

he's still

but the sax buckles

as she screams. he'll roll his eyes back,

giving her his last breath—hoping

she does what he wants.

a boy is a genius.

applause.
