A Room in Bruges x Jan Van Eyck

Reimagined from “The Arnolfini Portrait,” 1434. The National Gallery, London.

In the early to mid 1400s, being painted by the great Jan Van Eyck was a status symbol of wealth and exclusivity. This particular portrait, The Arnolfini Portrait, was presumed to be of a marriage. The Arnolfini’s came into wealth through fabrics and textiles; they sold some of the most high-quality wools, furs and garments in the most expensive dyes. The Reimagined A Room in Bruges, is the painting that everyone wanted back in the 1430s when this painting became famous. It is inspiration for how many people wanted to see themselves attain high status while not coming from an Aristocratic background. By not putting the Arnolfini figures in the painting, it is giving the viewer a chance to imagine themselves in the scene, in the experience. In the 1400s, this was what an underdog looked like winning—with a high rise bed (since beds were considered a luxury), (what was understood to be) designer shoes, and imported oranges. This painting was our modern day social media. So, I think if Dent-de-Lion was looking for the best painting to use the concept of Reimagined art, then he found it—and finished it well. This painting is extremely special. It’s for the dreamer.
